VTT: WP6 Integration and Implementation

Dear DOMCO project preparation group

VTT is interested in taking a part in the DOMO Brain project.

We could take a part in the WP6 Integration and Implementation

What we expect to become visible in the proposal:
- state of the art of BCI
- use-cases about the system to point out how the quality of life will
rise of the target users
- what will be the role of the home network and advanced sensors in the
DOMO Brain system

All the best: Hannu Kuukkanen

Dear Ferran

I am sorry that I could not join the skype-conference on Monday as currently
I am on holiday. I will be back to my office on mid of August. However, I can
access to my e-mail and is still able to contribute to the proposal as long as
we are included in the consortium.

Dear Ferran and all,
Apologies from London too: these are our busiest weeks of the year! We are
very keen to particpate in the project. Would it be possible for the project
summary and action plan to be forwarded at this stage to our Lab Manager, Ms
Alex Hyde, who might be able to keep up with the paperowrk and
correspondence before the next meetingh? Best, Lizbet

Dear all,
Friday we celebrated a skype-conference with Rolando in order to launch
the preparation of the DomCo for next FP7-2007-2
We decided to call a Monday morning - Linmi decide time is 10:30 CEST
right to you - a skype conference in order to arrange all the
preparatory works.
- Joan Capmany - EEL of UPC -  is proposing to do a second Pilot Net for
elder people in Catalonia.
- Linmi Tao is proposing : .... help muscleless people live
independently via BCI, sets up an important goal of the project, which
will have great impaction to the society. Based on our experiments on
BCI, we found that the  most difficult task for BCI is to find the start
point when the user
starts to think on the target we setup. Therefore, we proposed that
computer vision assisted  BCI. I do not know how much you have some
experience on BCI, but I think we can verify the idea together......

*DomCo** **STREP proposal - ICT (FP7-ICT-2007-2) *

*Challenge 7: ICT for Independent Living and Inclusion.*

Objective ICT-2007.7.2.c

*Effective Domotica Cooperation** **for Assistive and pro-Active Living
at home

** *

Objective ICT-2007.7.2: Accessible and Inclusive ICT
Target outcome
c) Advanced self-adaptive ICT-enabled assistive systems based on
non-invasive Brain to Computer Interaction (BCI), possibly combined with
other interaction modalities.
The multi-disciplinary research should aim to combine a critical mass of
European research to integrate progress in sensor technology,
self-adaptive systems and assistive technologies into effective
BCI-based systems usable outside the laboratory, e.g. in a home
environment.
DomCo solutions should be capable of compensating for functional
impairments and augmenting the individual performance of people with
disabilities, in application fields such as access to ICT-based products
and services, neuro-prosthesis control and support to rehabilitation and
training.
Proposals addressing sub-area b) and c) are expected to contribute to
the emergence of common European implementation platforms, RTD roadmaps,
dissemination and outreach activities. Industrial participation is
encouraged. and  b) New methods and tools for computer simulation of the
user interaction and computer-based validation frameworks (e.g.
immersive environments) providing support to developers of ICT-based
products and services for verification and optimisation of accessibility
features at all development stages.

Ferran

Michael Schumacher RFID-CHE email received

Dear Ferran,

I could not participate in the skype conference because I just came back from holidays. However, I remain interested in participating in the proposal. I would like to clarify with you which could be our contribution, adjusting the needs to the result of your last discussions. In summary, we can contribute in ÔÇ£distributed sensor data interpretationÔÇØ (see summary below).

Furthermore, we host here an RFID Center (http://www.rfidcenter.ch/) with big experience in EU projects, collaboration with health and food industry,  We could therefore also directly collaborate in any tasks related to RFID.

Let me know if you still consider us as a possible partner.

Kind regards,

Michael Schumacher

Distributed sensor data interpretation:

Control systems regulate the functioning of a particular system by adjusting any of a number of parameters. Examples range from a simple thermostat which switches heaters on and off to maintain a room well heated, all the way to complex monitoring and control systems used for nuclear reactor control. In many situations where the system to control is distributed geographically or organizationally, centralized control systems are not applicable. In such situations, many different autonomous components of the control system each controls a small part of the overall system, and have to interact with each other (e.g. by message exchange) in a coordinated fashion such that overall, the controlled system behaves as desired.

A well founded framework for coordination in such distributed settings are distributed constraint satisfaction methods (DCS). Many algorithms for DCS exist and are used for distributed constraint optimization, i.e. where some optimality criteria has to be satisfied.

Intelligent homes are composed of many distributed sensors spread throughout the rooms. The whole context continuously changes, because of new sensor data and arrival, leave or failure of new peer sensors. This requires:

1. dynamic recomposition of the network consistency,

2. and the distribution of the interpretation of the context data among the devices.

The interpretation of the networked data may be formulated with an optimality criteria. We expect that algorithms for distributed constraint satisfaction are applicable here. Those algorithms should allow to continuously maintain a maximum probability criteria allowing the interpretation of the sensor network. We want to study different interpretation possibilities such as position-related. This will be identified in the beginning of the project in colleration with the application scenarios.

Possible tasks:

- state of the art in distributed constraint satisfaction

- distributed sensor interpretation

Hannu VTT email 20Jul07

Dear Ferran, dear all Sorry but I'm on summer holiday till the 6th of August. I'm reading e-mail time to time and I'm not by the computer very often to response. If the competence of VTT as research institute partner will be needed I'll refer to the early e-mail of Ferran: "Brain to Computer Interaction (BCI), possibly combined with other interaction modalities". The BCI is not in focus of our team but we could be helpful in "other interaction modalities" like voice command, visual tracking/visual recognition (in house position tracing), information visualisation, invisible interfaces and HTI (Human Technology Interaction)solutions. Please let me know what kind of expertice (and possible other partners) will be needed in the project, so I'll response when I'm back in the office and can check our resources.
