Social Spaces for Research and Innovation Zaragoza, Spain, 9th-10th September 2008
Submitted by ferran on Tue, 2008-08-19 17:56.Social Spaces for Research and Innovation Zaragoza, Spain, 9th-10th September 2008
Nowadays there are many EU initiatives launched in different frameworks as the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development, the 4th Rural Development Programme, and the Fourth Regional Cooperation Programme INTERREG. They all contribute to the Lisbon Strategy promoting research, rural development and territorial cooperation respectively. As a result, a more competitive EU is expected based on knowledge society with full inclusion among people and territories.Civil society groups are created in all programs very much in line with EU policies, they also contribute to the bottom-up establishment of new policies and to the update of strategic programmes. Among them, Local Action Groups (LAG) focussed on Rural Development, Living Labs focussed both on R&D and regional cooperation, and an endless number of municipalities and public entities interested on wealth creation improving the citizen's quality of life. However, all these groups do not sufficiently exchange information and do not network adequately, lacking thus a common strategy to exploit synergies for achieving sustainability and larger impact. This is indeed needed if active communities or "Social Spaces for Research and Innovation" SSRI are to be created.
Despite the remarkable efforts and achieved results of both the European and the National technological platforms, there is still a lot of work to be done for full implementation into the society, in general, and, particularly, into excluded civil groups such as elderly or handicapped people in rural and urban communities.

The EU-US RFID Lighthouse symposium (Washington DC, September 22, 2008)
The European Commission (EC) and the United States Government (USG) are working together under the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC) Initiative to develop a roadmap for cooperation in the field of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), consisting of the short and long-term initiatives necessary to realize the potential of sharing information and best practices on the actual usages of RFID (more...). We hope to ensure that the deployment of RFID technologies in the business and consumer environments spurs innovation and helps society reap the benefits derived from the use of RFID in global commerce.

To this call we are studying to promote and participate the following proposals:
1) Objective 1.4 ePetitions
Background:
One of the most traditional ways for the general public to try and influence decision-making is by organising a petition. E-petition systems have been introduced in some Member States in order to make it easier to gather signatures from a wider audience. The Lisbon Treaty introduces the idea of the citizen's initiative8, whereby citizens will have the opportunity to call on the Commission to bring forward new policy proposals if they have the support of 1 million people from a significant number of EU Member States.
Tools should be developed that could be used to allow the public from across the EU to discuss ideas and create an online petition on EU issues. Such tools can also be used in a number of cross-border decision-making cases and therefore are relevant not only in the context of the
Lisbon Treaty but also in many legislative and decision-making processes.

Consensuality - Trusting Online Environments
Consensuality is the active collaboration and cooperation for the
self-benefit, join aim, profit, pleasure and well-being of all
concerned. In the case of social and business netwoks, this consent
often includes that of people not directly involved - primary partners,
voluntaries and other parties are affected by agreements, sometimes not
written, not signed, ad-hoc established and based on common sense.
Defining consent can sometimes be tricky. If someone consents under
pressure, we don't think that meets the "active collaboration"
criterion. And you can't consent to something you don't know about:
"Well you didn't say I couldn't send you an email when you agreed to
participate" .
Studies examine chemistry instruction from a perspective based
primarily on John Ziman's communal knowledge model for science. Several
lessons by three different teachers at three different schools were
observed and audiotaped. Data were examined to demonstrate the
occurrence of certain specific pedagogic tactics embodied in some
metacommunicative teacher utterances within the chemistry classroom
teaching/learning discourse. These tactics reflect teachers' concerns
for: (1) consensuality of their discourse; (2) consensibility of their
teaching utterances; (3) commonality of the frame of reference with
their students; and (4) the commensurability of the subject of their
teaching discourse with course requirements, curricular structure, and
nature of the discipline.
