The European Space Agency (ESA) is offering a training course for
undergraduate students from ESA Member States and Collaborating States
from 25 to 29 August at the European Space Technology and Research
Centre (ESTEC) in Noordwijk\, the Netherlands.
The workshop\,
entitled 'System engineering and technology for space missions' is
intended to provide participating students with a general overview and
better understanding of ESA activities in the area of end-to-end
mission development.
Special emphasis will be placed on
mission design\, system engineering and technology\, in order to enhance
the formal technical education of the participants and facilitate their
understanding of how the space sector operates.
Any
interested university students aged 18 to 28 may apply\, but the
workshop is primarily targeted at students who have completed one to
three years of their first degree. It will be particularly suitable for
those who are interested in joining ESA hands-on projects in future
(such as ESEO\, ESMO\, GENSO\, etc.) or who are considering pursuing a
career in the space industry.

Background\:
One of the most traditional ways for the general public to try and influence decision-making is by organising a petition. E-petition systems have been introduced in some Member States in order to make it easier to gather signatures from a wider audience. The Lisbon Treaty introduces the idea of the citizen's initiative8\, whereby citizens will have the opportunity to call on the Commission to bring forward new policy proposals if they have the support of 1 million people from a significant number of EU Member States.
Tools should be developed that could be used to allow the public from across the EU to discuss ideas and create an online petition on EU issues. Such tools can also be used in a number of cross-border decision-making cases and therefore are relevant not only in the context of the
Lisbon Treaty but also in many legislative and decision-making processes.

which will be held on 13-15 of October 2008 in Stockholm\, Sweden kindly
hosted by Ericsson.
At this WWRF meeting\, working group sessions continuing the work of
WWRF on radio\, network and service perspectives will be complimented by
a series of plenary sessions. These will provide an overview of global
activities in relation to the Future Internet and also to the
challenges and opportunities of developing sustainable communications\,
adding value to the role of ICT in addressing climate change issues.
We would like to invite you to come to this meeting to get an
overview from the world‘s leading thinkers on these hot topics and
through networking to form new international initiatives.
Civil society groups are created in all programs very much in line with EU policies\, they also contribute
to the bottom-up establishment of new policies and to the update of strategic programmes. Among them\, Local
Action Groups (LAG) focussed on Rural Development\, Living Labs focussed both on R&\;D and regional cooperation\,
and an endless number of municipalities and public entities interested on wealth creation improving the citizen's
quality of life. However\, all these groups do not sufficiently exchange information and do not network adequately\,
lacking thus a common strategy to exploit synergies for achieving sustainability and larger impact. This is indeed
needed if active communities or "\;Social Spaces for Research and Innovation"\; SSRI are to
be created.
Despite the remarkable efforts and achieved results of both the European and the National technological platforms\,
there is still a lot of work to be done for full implementation into the society\, in general\, and\, particularly\,
into excluded civil groups such as elderly or handicapped people in rural and urban communities.

The WWRF meeting in Stockholm gives you the unique

The EU-funded GLOBALDIV project is organising a first summer school which will be held in Piacenza\, Italy\, from 8 to 12 September.
The summer school offers theoretical and practical lectures within an interactive educational programme directed first and foremost at PhD students and junior researchers. The number of participants is limited to 40. Candidates will be selected according to their field of experience\, interests and motivation.
Lectures will focus on\:
- farm animal production systems and threats to biodiversity in Europe\, emerging and developing countries\;
- novel technologies for DNA analysis\;
- population genetics\, statistics and software for the analysis of genomic and mitochondrial DNA data\;

from FIRE and any other related area in national\, EUREKA (Celtic) and

Call for papers\: High Impact Services
Public procurement
is considered a key sector of the EU economy\, accounting for about 16%
of the GDP in 2006. The European Union has fixed an objective of 100%
electronic availability and 50% real use for procurement procedures
above the legal thresholds by 2010.
The examples mentioned above are all High Impact services
that deploy large scale solutions to millions of users and take into
account the size/impact ratio in relation to the share of the total
relevant population reached. High Impact services are one of the top
five priorities of the European Commission’s eGovernment Action Plan.
These
HI services\, along with related applications such as customs
declarations\, are typical government income generators\, therefore
allowing a more easily quantification of their ‘impact’. On the
delivery side\, other services of significant interest may be found in
the health and social sectors\, where High Impact involves consideration
of public value and value-chains.
